Lawsuit Alleges Vision Injury, Pigmentary Maculopathy Due to Elmiron Use

In one of the first cases concerning eye damage related to drug Elmiron, the complaint filed in New Jersey Superior Court alleges failure to warn of the drug’s side effects. Elmiron is a prescription drug widely used to treat a bladder pain condition known as interstitial cystitis. Concerns relating to potentially permanent vision loss and other eye damage have recently been raised, in conjunction with long-term use of the drug. These concerns include pigmentary maculopathy, a retinal disease.

The plaintiff in this case was part of a study published in 2018 linking vision damage to long-term Elmiron use. Her lawsuit alleges that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Elmiron’s manufacturer, knew about the risks for potential eye problems, but failed to provide adequate warnings to patients and doctors.
